2D v. 3D Round 1: Mario
The timeline of video games can be divided roughly into two eras. The first, from the humble beginnings of games until the mid-90′s, was the 2D era, with sprites, backgrounds, and all the jazz associated with them. During and after the mid-90′s, there came a revolution: games broke free of dimensional restraints. In other words, after Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time created a stable basis for 3D, 2D was imagined to have died.
However, we find that 2D has entered a resurgence lately. This feature compares the value of each form of game in images, with games from similar games or series of games compared. One will be 2D, the other 3D. We’ll see which one wins out in the end. That is, which one appeals to me personally the most, as well as which is the more compelling overall. Only art design will be debated, not the nuances or mechanics of game play. With that, let us begin:
First Round: Super Mario World vs. Super Mario 64

The Verdict:
For me, Super Mario World wins hands down. The first point against 64 is that it looks far more dated than Mario World, mostly because of the primitive 3D on show, as compared to refined, polished 2D. World features smooth, crisp edges and a bright atmosphere, as opposed to the muddy, jagged feel of 64.
I agree whole-heartedly. ^_^
Still, 3D nowadays approaches photorealism
I love 2D games, though. They’re easy on hardware, simple to develop (Well, okay, there are engines like Soya3D that make 3D super-easy, but still…), and they’re pretty easy to make assets for, too.
Not to mention that 2D games can have really beautiful visuals that 3D games would require ten times the hardware to render. :3
I agree with both Henry and 724, Super Mario is nearly undateable as there are many out on the internet who still play them!
I would have to agree that Super Mario World does look better, the 3D does seem a little dated but then again one would have to take into perspective the era of the game. Super Mario 64 is one of the first games to be published in 3D by Nintendo, that was maybe 1996 (don’t quote me on that) graphics have greatly improved by that time, as stated by Henry. Now there are games that have very good graphics quality, example Final Fantasy XIII or Final Fantasy IV for DS.
Try comparing super mario 64 ds and new super mario bros!
I love the game
